Quit talking, start acting at intersection

After reading "Most dangerous for a reason: Intersection of Randall Road, Route 72 shut down by four-vehicle wreck" on June 14, I remain disappointed in the efforts, or lack thereof, to make this intersection safer.

As a longtime resident of Gilberts, only a few miles from Route 72 and Randall Road, I have watched the former four-way stop sign intersection develop into the risky venture it is today.

I can vouch for the fact that it is not simply the high volume of traffic passing through that has led this intersection to consistently have one of the highest accident rates of all Kane County intersections.

However, being a victim of a car crash at this intersection myself, the fact that so many lives pass through should be the main reason to improve the safety of this intersection.

While Gerald Donaldson had excellent ideas, they have not been implemented to the best of ability, if they have been carried out at all.

The slightly reduced speed limit does not stop people from constantly flying through the intersection. This may be because many other places on Randall Road still remain 55 miles per hour.

And yes, while increased police enforcement is a great way to prevent accidents, their presence only seems apparent directly following an accident and then fades away.

Why not add a "left on green arrow" type of turn signal, specially timed so no one needs to rush through the light? The latest sign that has been placed on the light post now only reminds people of the law, "Left turn yield on green."

The combination of drivers rushing to make it through the yellow and even red lights and others trying to clear the intersection from a left turn equals this disaster that has become an annual tragedy. With such a quickly growing area, something needs to be done to protect citizens new and old.
