Businessman pleads guilty to computer fraud
The former chief financial officer of a Round Lake window glazing firm pleaded guilty to computer fraud Wednesday and agreed to repay the company $256,705.
Paul Matik Jr., 53, stole the money from United Skys, Inc., a manufacturer of skylights, solariums and pool enclosures.
Assistant State's Attorney Patricia Fix said Matik, of 850 Prairie Lawn Road, Glenview, stole the money by writing $2,000 payroll checks to himself between April 30, 2001 and Jan. 17 of this year.
The checks were discovered when an auditor asked why more payroll checks were being written than the number of employees in the company.
Shortly after his arrest, police seized all of Matik's bank accounts. Fix said the restitution would be paid to the company immediately.
In addition, Matik will pay $1,900 to the state's attorney's office to cover the bank processing fees to collect the records.
Matik will forfeit an additional $80,000 he had in his bank accounts.
A licensed attorney and accountant, Matik is likely to face disciplinary action from the governing agencies of both professions, Fix said.
Circuit Judge John Phillips placed Matik on probation for two years and ordered him to complete 100 hours of community service.
