Hospital should not cut diabetes classes
I am shocked and appalled by St. Alexius Medical Center's decision to eliminate their diabetes education program.
Diabetes is considered a growing epidemic by many health care professionals today, and St Alexius' merging of their program with that of Alexian Brothers will make access to care much more difficult for patients in the Hoffman Estates area.
My mother is diabetic, and received superb care and instruction from the educator at St. Alexius. She would have had a much more difficult time if she had had to travel to Alexian Brothers.
St. Alexius spokesman Matt Wakely's comment that "one or two duplicate positions were cut as a result, but more people will be employed in the long run" makes trivial of the fact that people who've dedicated their lives to helping others are now out of a job, and shows how callous and uncaring St. Alexius Hospital is.
St. Alexius' crest says "Caritas Christi Urget Nos," or "With us, the love of Christ is a compelling motive." This action proves that their real love is not for Almighty God, but for the Almighty Dollar. It certainly isn't for their patients or employees.
My mother, my family, and I'm sure many others, will take our business elsewhere, to a hospital that actually means it when they say they care.
