Five arrested in Sugar Grove break-ins

Five people were arrested after police said they broke into separate homes under construction in Sugar Grove late Saturday.

Four 16-year-old boys from Sugar Grove were found by police in a home under construction on the 700 block of Wild Ginger Road in the Black Walnut Trails subdivision just before 11 p.m.

The boys were smoking from a hookah and knocked it over when they tried to run away, burning a spot on the stairway, according to police.

Police caught three of the boys at the house and one other later. Three were charged with criminal trespass, resisting arrest and mob action. The fourth was only charged with criminal trespass.

Because they are juveniles, their names were not released by police.

About an hour later, police saw Duane Horton, 30, of the 0 block of South Stolp Avenue in Aurora, leaving a house under construction on the 1800 block of Hunters Ridge Lane in the Hannaford Farms subdivision.

Horton was charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools, according to police. His bond was set at $300,000 Sunday.

That incident is still under investigation and more charges are possible, Sugar Grove Investigator John Sizer said.

Sugar Grove and surrounding towns have seen an increase in thefts from homes under construction recently, Sizer said. The price of copper has increased and that has been stolen in several of the cases, he said.
