Salute your veterans at Aurora's parade
Veterans Day parades don't seem to attract the crowds or enthusiasm they once did, says one local commander.
That's why it's critical to spread the word about upcoming events to honor soldiers who have served or are serving now, said Norris Erickson, commander of Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84.
"People seem to think it's another holiday, or just another day," he said. "This day is especially for veterans and remembering those who have passed on."
Post 84's Veterans Day parade will begin at 10:15 a.m. Sunday at Benton and Water streets in downtown Aurora.
The parade will be a smaller one, with about 20 units. Guest speaker Maj. Gen. Steven Best will lead the veterans.
About 600 people, including participants, are expected, said city organizer Lisa Jungels, though that's always weather-dependent.
Local veterans and military groups will participate, as well as the Marmion Flannigan Rifles, the East Aurora High Navy Junior ROTC, the Aurora Lamplighters Barbershop Chorus and the Chicago Highland Rifles.
The parade will head north on Broadway to Downer Place, then west to the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall.
A ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. outside the GAR Hall, with a military rifle salute at 11 a.m.
Erickson said he'd especially like to see more young people attend the event -- as well as get involved with Post 84.
"It's very moving," he said of the ceremony. "It's honoring the veterans from all conflicts, past, present and future."
