Algonquin eyes affordable housing for seniors

Aiming to keep more residents in town for life, Algonquin officials Tuesday night heard plans for its first affordable housing building for seniors.

The three-story, 18-unit condominium building would be part of the 55-and-older age-restricted Waterford of Algonquin development at routes 62 and 25. As part of their previous approval for the development, the village board required a portion to include affordable housing units.

"We have an aging population, and that will continue for the foreseeable future," said Assistant Village Manager Jeff Mihelich.

"We're trying to do our best to provide people with the ability to spend their whole lives in Algonquin if they choose to."

The building would be constructed with building materials to match the surrounding townhouses, with reddish-brown brick on its first floor, tan vinyl siding on the second and third floors, complemented with white trim and window casings. The pitched roof would be covered with architectural asphalt shingles, and white balconies would frame the front and rear of the building.

If approved by the village board in December, construction could begin as early as spring, Mihelich said.
