Learn why covered bridges are important to country's history
The Barrington Area Historical Society is ready to unveil its latest exhibit.
Starting Sunday and running through Jan. 30, the historical society will host "Covered Bridges: Spanning the American Landscape."
The exhibit will feature photographs and detailed architectural and engineering drawings of bridges from across the country.
The United States is home to about 800 covered wood bridges -- nearly 60 percent of the world's total.
The exhibit explores the ways covered bridges crisscross the American countryside and affect its daily life.
According to the historical society, the photographers captured images of structural details and produced black-and-white and color portraits of bridges and their surrounding landscapes.
The drawings include intricate renderings of engineering elements and exploded diagrams demonstrating how the bridges are constructed.
The historical society, 212 W. Main St., is open daily between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Stellar performance: Congratulations go out to Barrington High School's student newspaper The RoundUp for recently receiving a prestigious honor.
The Kettle Moraine Press Association recently awarded the paper with an All-KEMPA rating, the highest honor the organization can bestow on a school newspaper.
The paper was judged against hundreds of other high school newspapers from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
This award continues the paper's recent success.
This past April, it won a silver certificate from the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association.
