Lake Villa District Library notes

Register for programs at the adult reference desk or call the library. Patrons must register in person for programs requiring a fee. Programs may be canceled due to lack of registration.

Those requiring special accommodations to attend any library programs should contact community services two weeks in advance.

Special performers: These programs are free to attend and fill quickly. Tickets are required for all adults and their accompanying children ages 2 and older.

Tickets can be acquired either in person at the youth services desk or in limited numbers online beginning at 10 a.m. the day of registration.

For online tickets visit the home page at www.lvdl.org; go to library events, click on the month and scroll down to the date. Click on the name of the program and fill in the registration information. Tickets reserved online must be picked up from the youth services desk within seven business days. Check each program description for ticket information.

• The Magic Onion: Mark Nichols' The Puppet Place will share this tale of a princess and her dog, a wicked magician and his onion, a hungry dragon and a handsome prince at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14. Registration is underway.

• How About A Story: Storyteller Denise Berry-Hanna will share a funny and heartwarming collection of traditional folk tales and original favorites at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 11. Registration begins Dec. 3.

Hours and Closings: The library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. The library will be closed today.

Create a Tagline: Lake Villa District Library is looking for a tagline to help communicate its mission. Stop by the library in November and offer a suggestion. Entries will be accepted through Nov. 30. The Lake Villa District Library Board will review submissions in December. A $50 Borders Gift Card will be awarded to those whose entries are selected.

Little Listeners: The library is now offering programs intended to coach parents and caregivers in supporting children's language skills through rhymes, stories and language-building activities. The programs are designed for one-on-one interaction between child and adult partner; no other siblings should attend. Children must be the proper age by Dec. 4. Registration is under way.

• Little Listeners A: For ages 3 to 17 months. 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 4 to 18; 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 5 to 26; and 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 6 to 27.

• Little Listeners B: For ages 15 to 28 months. 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 4 to 18; 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 5 to 26; and 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 6 to 27.

• Little Listeners C: For ages 24 to 36 months. 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 4 to 18; 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays Dec. 5 to 26; 9:30 a.m. Thursdays Dec. 6 to 27.

Lakes Literary League: All writers, published or not, are encouraged to attend at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 and Jan. 3. Those with writing to share can do so. Drop off and pick up copies of writing at the Adult Reference Desk.

Thanks for the Memory: Dr. Sasser will present a brief overview of how memory works, including the characteristics of sensory, short-term, and long-term memory, at 7 p.m. Dec. 6. Learn what lifestyle factors affect memory and strategies for remembering names and other information. Register at the Adult Reference Desk or by phone.

Adult book discussion: The adult book discussion group meets at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month in the library's Wilton Room. Refreshments are served and new members are welcome.

On Dec. 8, the topic will be "The Christmas Thief," by Mary Higgins Clark, who joined her daughter, best-selling mystery writer Carol Higgins Clark, to create a suspenseful and humorous holiday tale.

Choir and Band Concert: Enjoy vocal and instrumental music with a holiday flavor featuring the Lakes Community High School Chamber Choir, Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble and Jazz Choir at 2 p.m. Dec. 9. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend.

Board Meetings: The regular meetings of the board of trustees of the Lake Villa District Library for the rest of fiscal year 2007-08 are as follows:

Internet for Beginners: Take an instructive lesson on basic Internet searching at 1 p.m. Dec. 12 or Jan. 9. Register at the Adult Reference Desk or by phone at (847) 356-7711.

Veteran's History Project: Both the Illinois State Library and Library of Congress offer opportunities to preserve history by sponsoring Veteran History Projects. Library staff will interview two WWII Veterans and you how patrons can honor veterans in their families by participating in a special project at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 12.

Veterans are welcome to share their own war memories.

Holiday Appetizers: Chef Carol Mackey will show you how to make bite-sized treats perfect for any holiday gathering at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13. Class is limited to 40. Register in person at the Adult Reference Desk. There is a fee of $3.
