Ever wonder about South Elgin snow plowing?

In Elgin, crews typically begin collecting snow once it's 2 inches high. Ever wonder at which point South Elgin begins plowing snow?

We turned to Chuck Behm, director of the village's public works department for the answer.

Like Elgin, the village's crew of about a dozen workers begins picking up snow once it reaches 2 inches.

Workers use salt for anything that doesn't measure up to 2 inches, Behm said.

South Elgin's streets are plowed in the town in the following order: main streets, secondary streets, cul-de-sacs, then dead ends.

The village covers 144 center lane miles when it removes the snow, Behm said -- that's the number of miles workers drive before all of the snow is picked up.

For example, on a two-lane street, snow plowers will cover one lane and then come back and plow the second lane.

Parking isn't allowed on the streets after a 2-inch snowfall and you should park in a driveway, Behm added.

"They've got to get off the road or we can't get through," he explained.
