E. Moline man held in area bank robbery

A 45-year-old man from East Moline, Ill., was charged with robbing a Des Plaines bank last month.

John Wils was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his East Moline home, police said.

In investigating the Oct. 9 robbery at Plaza Bank, 379 S. River Road, Des Plaines police and the FBI got information that led Des Plaines Detective Malea Held to share the suspect's photo with police in Moline, Ill., police said.

Moline police helped identify Wils, of 611 33rd Ave., East Moline.

Wils gave Held a written statement admitting to robbing the Plaza Bank and police said they found two loaded pistols in the front seat of Wils' car at the time of his arrest.

"She made the case," Des Plaines Police Chief James Prandini said of Held.

Held declined to comment.

Wils also apparently implicated himself in an August armed robbery of a Verizon wireless store in Kentucky, police said.
