Sox swap Garland for SS Orlando Cabrera

The White Sox made a major trade on Monday, acquiring Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Cabrera and cash considerations from the Los Angels Angels in exchange for starting pitcher Jon Garland.

Cabrera, 33, batted .301 with 35 doubles, 8 home runs, 86 RBI, a career-high 101 runs scored and 20 stolen bases in 155 games with the Angels in 2007.

An 11-year veteran, Cabrera tied for the American League lead with 11 sacrifice hits, ranked third with 63 multihit games and finished sixth in hits (192).

The Sox are expected to either trade incumbent shortstop Juan Uribe or move him to second base.

Cabrera, who has played for the Montreal Expos (1997-2004), the Boston Red Sox ('04) and Angels, won his second Gold Glove Award this season after leading all AL shortstops in fielding percentage (.983).

The 5-foot-9, 185-pounder is signed through the 2008 season for $9 million. The Angels are picking up a portion of the salary.

Garland has been a reliable starter for the White Sox since 2002.

The right-hander was 10-13 with a 4.23 ERA this past season. Garland won 18 games in 2005 and again in '06.

Garland, who has one year and $12 million left on his contract, is 92-81 with a 4.41 ERA in 246 games (223 starts) over eight major-league seasons, all with the Sox.
