We need leaders like Lieberman

Some time ago I found myself very impressed with a politician; this is very rare so it kind of stuck with me.

The politician was Joe Lieberman, a Democrat from Connecticut. Mr. Lieberman was in the news for his thinking on the war in Iraq. Being a Democrat, he was supposed to oppose the war and take every opportunity he could to criticize the effort and the administration.

It turns out that Senator Lieberman had made several trips to Iraq and he felt very strongly we were doing the right thing and that eventually it would work out and benefit the Iraqis as well as America.

This went totally against the grain within the Democratic Party, but Mr. Lieberman felt strongly about his position and refused to change his view even after threats from within his party started coming in.

A politician who says what he thinks and then stands up for his beliefs even when these beliefs are unpopular -- sounds like what a true leader is supposed to be. These are the type of characteristics that should elevate someone within any organization and propel them toward the top.

As of today the leading contender for president within the Democratic Party is taking some heat for her habit of trying to have it both ways, flip-flopping on issues and changing her answers depending on the particular group she is addressing.

Indecisive and vague responses take you to the top, strong-willed and sticking to your beliefs get you thrown out of the party. -- Mr. Lieberman had to run as an independent in the last election, which he won.
