Briefs: Kitten adoption drive
A Kitten Adoptathon is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at MidAmerica Bank, 2600 E. Main St., St. Charles. At least 20 kittens of varying colors will be up for adoption. The drive is a project of Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, a St. Charles-based nonprofit group. St. Patrick's fundraiser:
The St. Patrick Catholic School Home and School Association's 12th annual Emerald Evening fundraiser is planned for 6 tonight at the Q Center, 1405 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles. This is the school's largest annual fundraiser. The event will feature casino-style gaming, dinner and live music. Admission is $85 a person. Call (630) 513-8557.
Playhouse selling stuff
First Street Playhouse, First and Water streets, Batavia, is selling off props, lumber, paint supplies and furniture. You can make an offer after the 8 p.m. performance tonight of "The Pillowman." Extra police hit streets
For the next two weeks extra St. Charles police will be on the streets targeting drunken drivers. The effort is being funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the You Drink, You Drive, You Lose program.
An Almost Winter Day
An Almost Winter Day will be held at County Park in South Elgin between 3 and 5 p.m. today. It will feature a petting zoo, pony rides, horse drawn sleigh rides, a coffee bar, a cookie decorating station, a craft station and a bonfire to keep everyone warm. Santa Claus will arrive at 5 p.m. to light the Christmas tree.
Fireworks celebration
Fox Valley Park District will celebrate its 60th anniversary at 8:30 p.m. Saturday with a fireworks show at McCullough Park, just south of the Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora. The all-aerial display will follow a sold-out performance by Beatles tribute band American English inside the center. For the fireworks, residents can park in the Aurora Post Office lot at 525 Broadway. The show will last about 15 minutes. Call (630) 966-4527.

Clerk's holiday hours
The Kane County clerk's vital records office will be open until 8 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday, the clerk's office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will remain closed Thursday and Friday, reopening at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 26 to resume normal business hours. The clerk's office is at 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.
