Purchases at Glen Ellyn store aid charity

Sure, shopping is always fun.

But it's even better when it's for a good cause.

For 22 years, Saret Charitable Fund has helped support area residents.

On Saturday, the group will host the grand opening of its new retail store, Saret Treasures of Hope in Glen Ellyn's Baker Hill Shopping Plaza. The opening event is planned for 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Saret spokeswoman Jean Bartholomew said the store is an outgrowth of the entire idea of Saret, which assists DuPage County residents in need who've been turned away from government and private resources.

"Hopefully, it will add tremendously to the ability of Saret to connect with people and make people aware of its existence," Bartholomew said.

The store will feature health and beauty products, Saret jewelry, and works by local and international artists. Artists hail from India, Israel, Nepal, Peru, China, Thailand and the United States. Shoppers also can find essential oils, flower essences, organically certified body-care products and teas, handmade belts, bags and clothing, and books on herbs.

The store will offer classes on beading for its volunteers and disabled clients, as well as classes open to the public on semi-precious gems, health and environmental products.

In the past, most of the efforts took place in the house of Chana Bernstein, Saret's founder. The store will give Bernstein and other organization members some room to stretch out.

"This will give her a place where she can have an actual office where she can work as well," Bartholomew said.

All in all, the focus of the organization remains the same -- to reach out to individuals facing economic hardships or are in need of immediate assistance.

"There's a huge demand in DuPage County for these kinds of services," Bartholomew said.
