Bartlett High alum sentenced for threat

A former Bartlett High School student was ordered Monday to perform 30 hours of public service for sending alarming text messages to a classmate on the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.

Gabriel C. Samaan, now 20, of Carol Stream was arrested April 24 and later charged with disorderly conduct. Samaan sent text messages on his cellular phone warning students to be careful at school April 20 -- which marked the eight-year anniversary of the deadly Colorado school shooting.

The messages also referred to trench coats and sawed-off shotguns. Samaan was expelled. DuPage Associate Judge Paul Fullerton convicted him Monday after a short trial.

Besides public service, Samaan must pay $440 in fines and fees and undergo counseling if deemed appropriate.
