Briefs: Victim's family sues bar

The family of a man shot to death in December while at a Chicago nightclub with former Chicago Bear Terry "Tank" Johnson has sued the bar's owners and operators. The family of William Posey say Ice Bar employees served too much alcohol to 34-year-old Michael Selvie of Chicago. Selvie was later charged with Posey's murder and is being held in Cook County jail. The lawsuit names the Ice Bar, Anna Marie Amato, Jason Modzelewski and others as defendants. Posey and Johnson were out together at the Ice Bar less than 48 hours after police raided Johnson's home in Gurnee. Johnson was charged with gun possession without an owner identification card. Posey, who also was living at the home, was arrested on felony drug charges.

Wrongful death alleged

The family of an aspiring rapper who was shot and killed by Chicago police earlier this month has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the department. Attorney Andre Grant said the shooting death of Freddie Wilson was unprovoked and highlights a pattern of police misconduct in Chicago's minority and low-income neighborhoods. Police officials have said the Nov. 13 shooting took place during a traffic stop. But Grant said several neighbors and witnesses reported Wilson was walking to his car when he was confronted by police. The Cook County medical examiner's office has said Wilson was shot 18 times, including at least three times in the back. Some witnesses reported Wilson was unarmed, though officials say a weapon was found near his car.

Second teen charged

Police charged a second teenager Thursday in a string of armed robberies that allegedly culminated in the fatal shooting of a University of Chicago graduate student from Senegal. Demetrius Warren, 17, was charged with three counts of armed robbery and one count of aggravated discharge of a weapon, but he was not charged with murder in the death of Amadou Cisse, said police spokesman Marcel Bright. "The only murder charges so far are against Eric Walker, but this is still an ongoing investigation," Bright said. Walker, 16, was charged Wednesday with one count of first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, one count of attempted armed robbery and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. A Cook County judge denied bond for Walker during a court appearance at which he did not enter a plea. Warren's charges related to two incidents that took place on Nov. 19 near the university's campus in the 90 minutes before Cisse was killed, authorities said. In the first, someone shot at a university employee about two blocks from the murder scene. In the second, two female students were robbed.

Man held on sex charge

A Rolling Meadows man was ordered held on $40,000 bond Thursday on a charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse stemming from an alleged Thanksgiving encounter with a young relative. Prosecutors said Roberto Cortez-Herrera, 31, of the 4900 block of Algonquin Parkway, was seated at the kitchen table of a relative's home Nov. 22 when he grabbed the hand of a female relative next to him and put it on his thigh and then his genitals. The incident happened about 8 a.m. at a home in Rolling Meadows, authorities said, and involved a girl under the age of 13. Cortez-Herrera was arrested Wednesday by Rolling Meadows police, authorities said. He's due back in court Dec. 28 in Rolling Meadows.
