Ela Area Public Library notes

Erik Larson: Erik Larson, best-selling author of "The Devil in the White City," will discuss his latest historical book, "Thunderstruck," from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Following his presentation, Larson will answer questions and sign copies of his books. "Thunderstruck" will be available for purchase.

"The Devil in the White City" was the book chosen for Ela Area Public Library's One Book, One Reading Community program, which was held over the summer and won the 2004 Edgar Award in the Best Fact Crime category.

Caudill Challenge Group: Ela Area Public Library's series of monthly book discussions for students featuring Rebecca Caudill-nominated books is under way. Held on Wednesdays, the next Caudill Challenge will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for students in fourth to sixth grade. Participants will discuss "Shakespeare's Secret" by Elise Broach. The discussion group will meet again on Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. Participants can pick up copies of the book at the Children's Reference Desk. Register for each session separately.

Filled Up But Feeling Empty: Ela Area Public Library welcomes Dr. Ronn Read of Alpine Chapel for a discussion on what one can do when experiencing feelings of emptiness from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Read will introduce a self-diagnostic "tool" to challenge listeners on why they might experience frustrations with people and circumstances and where those frustrations can lead.

Cuba Road Film Series: Watch "The Legends of Cuba Road" and "Return to Cuba Road," rated "PG-13" and meet the stars of these horror films from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 20. The films are based on ghostly legends that take place on nearby Cuba Road.

Senior Book Group: Ela Area Public Library offers a senior book discussion from 9:30 to 11 a.m. the fourth Monday of each month. The next program will take place Oct. 22 and participants will discuss "The Measure of a Man" by Sidney Poitier. Large print and paperback copies of this title are available. The next discussion will be Nov. 26, when the featured book will be "Whistling Season" by Ivan Doig.

DDR and Guitar Hero: Middle and high school students in seventh through 12th grade are invited to stop by from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22 to play Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero. The next DDR and Guitar Hero open house is scheduled for Nov. 12. Registration is not required.

Hearty Soups for Winter: Chef Carol Mackey will share some of her favorite soups on from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24. Sample and take home new recipes. Registration is required, and there is a $3 tasting fee. Sign up at the library. Space is limited.

Spooky Tunes: Enjoy an evening of entertaining and not-too-spooky Halloween songs at 6 p.m. Oct. 25. Presented by musician Carol Weston, this event is for children of all ages and their families. No registration is required. For more information, call the Children's Department at (847) 438-3840.
