Bowling fundraiser raises record amount
The 13th annual Johnny B's Candlelight Bowl last May raised more money for charity than the event has in the past -- $11, 250.
It's been put on by Johnny Burke, the Palatine High School bowling coach for years to benefit kids with cancer.
As a surprise this year, Chicago Bear Anthony Adams showed up as a surprise, bowling and signing autographs.
Burke started the annual event after student Brian Delanty died of leukemia in 1988. All money from the event goes to his foundation, which donates to hospitals that help children with cancer.
For information on this year's event which will be May 9, go to www.johnnyb4kids.com.
'Party' a hit: Speaking of successful fundraisers, there's another one to report on. The Rotary Club of Palatine raised close to $60,000 during Party Over Palatine VI, which was Sept. 14. The money will go to several local charities and the development of Rotary Plaza, a new green space located at the corners of Smith Street and Palatine Road.
Almost 400 people came out for the event at Durty Nellies. The Palatine Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. at Marlowe's Restaurant, 704 W. Euclid Ave. Go to www.palatinerotary.com for more information.
Fall fest Saturday: If you're looking for something to do on Saturday, head to the Palatine Park District's 10th annual Fall Festival. It's at the Palatine Stables, 1510 N. Northwest Highway. Come join in the fun and learn more about horses and life at the stables. There will be pony rides, wagon rides, crafts, activities, pumpkins for sale and concessions. For more information, call (847) 359-0009. The fest is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free. No dogs will be allowed.
Got leaves? Leaf collection begins Oct. 15 for Palatine residents. It happens every other week, so go to palatine.il.us to find out dates in your area.
