Man jumps into Fox River trying to flee Elgin police
Elgin fire officials fished a man out of the Fox River on Tuesday afternoon after he tried to evade police by leaping off the Kimball Street Bridge.
Police arrested 31-year-old Jose Antonio Perez, and charges are expected today at bond call.
Elgin police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said officers pulled Perez over for a traffic stop on State Street about 3 p.m. As officers were talking with him, Dinges said Perez ran off and jumped into the river.
The fire department was called when attempts to reach Perez with a rope failed.
Dinges said Perez spent less than 10 minutes in the water and a rescue was not needed.
