Bunco fundraiser to aid breast cancer charity
The third annual Batavia Bunco for Breast Cancer fundraiser will be on Oct. 11.
The dice game depends on luck, and leaves neighbors a lot of time to visit and talk, said Diane Anderson, one of the event's organizers.
The fundraiser grew out of a group of Batavia moms who met to play the game. They decided to hold the event to benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation after a group from Clarendon Hills held such a benefit in honor of one of its members.
Last year the event raised $5,400. Because of increasing interest in the event, it has been moved from Bethany Lutheran Church to Riverview Banquets, 1117 N. Washington St.
Participants will get three rounds of bunco, snacks, goody bags and possible door prizes for the $25 entry fee. There will also be a cash bar, silent auction and a raffle for a six-night stay in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Experience at bunco is not necessary, and the game is easy to learn, Anderson said. The fundraiser will be capped at 250 participants.
Doors open for the event at 6 p.m., and games will start at 6:45 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Sue's Family Hair Co., 139 S. Batavia Ave., or by contacting Anderson at (630) 879-8937 or bataviabfbc@comcast.net.
Hydrant flushing: The city of Batavia will be flushing fire hydrants for the next month. West-side hydrant flushing started last week and will end Oct. 12. East-side hydrant flushing will run from Oct. 15 to Nov. 2.
Signs will be posted in neighborhoods letting residents know the exact dates.
Residents should check their water before washing clothes. People who get rust on their clothes when washing can pick up a free bottle of Red-B-Gone from the utility billing department at city hall, 100 N. Island Ave., or at the public works Building, 200 N. Raddant Road.
Got an idea? Applications for the Batavia Foundation For Educational Excellence fall grants are due on Oct. 15.
Parents, students and community members are allowed to propose programs, activities and materials to buy. The grants will not exceed $700 and will cover purchases not in the district's budget. Applications are available through the group's Web site, www.bataviafoundation.org.
