Workers should be presumed innocent
Rep. Peter Roskam, in his Oct. 4 letter, again demonstrates his party's whimsical attitude toward civil rights and the presumption of innocence.
He condemns the new Illinois law that prohibits participation in the federal government's E-Verify system to verify employment eligibility and says it should be overturned. Never mind that the federal Government Accountability Office has already determined that E-Verify is error-filled, out-of-date, incomplete, and has been made available prematurely.
Never mind that there are no safeguards against employer fraud or misuse.
Never mind that there is no process in place for correcting faulty information. Never mind that if a perfectly legal employee cannot be verified with the system, they must be presumed guilty and fired within 90 days.
I guess waiting for and encouraging a system that works is too much to ask of politicians who don't really appreciate the constitutional rights they took an oath to defend.
