Prayer breakfast happening next week

There's still time to get tickets to the annual Des Plaines Mayor's Prayer Breakfast on Oct. 18.

The event hosted by the Des Plaines Ministerial Association and Mayor Tony Arredia will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Casa Royale Banquets, 783 Lee St.

Nancy Loo, Channel 32 Fox News anchor, will speak about how one's past affects his or her character.

Jim Ernst, deacon at Our Lady of Hope Church and treasurer of the ministerial association, and the Rev. Gene Dyer, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, helped plan the event.

Proceeds from the breakfast will go toward the Illinois Safety Alliance Burn Camp. Tickets are $25 and are available in the mayor's office on the sixth floor of city hall, 1420 Miner St.

Checks may be made payable to the Des Plaines Ministerial Association.

Resurrection host fundraiser luncheon: The Auxiliary of Resurrection Medical Center will host its annual fall benefit luncheon Oct. 20 at Fountain Blue Banquets, 2300 Mannheim Road. The event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will benefit the renovation of the intensive care unit family waiting room at Resurrection Medical Center.

Tickets are $40, which include a gourmet meal and entertainment by Elvis Presley impersonator Rick Saucedo. For more information or tickets, call (847) 813-3465 by Friday. Resurrection runs Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines.

Schoolhouse Rock: Conjunction Junction, what's your function?

If you remember such "Schoolhouse Rock" classics from the Saturday morning cartoon series, you would have enjoyed a recent performance at Forest Elementary School, 1375 Fifth Ave.

A presentation of "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" brought the cartoons to life, thanks to the Forest Parent Teacher Council.

Songs included "A Noun is a Person, Place or Thing," "Three is a Magic Number," "Unpack your Adjectives," "Just a Bill," "The Preamble," "Do the Circulation," "Conjunction Junction," "Great American Melting Pot," "Interplanet Janet," and "Interjections."

Community blood drive: Des Plaines Community Health Nurse Madeline May is calling for donors to attend the community blood drive on Tuesday. The drive will be from 1 to 6:30 p.m. at the Des Plaines Library, 1501 Ellinwood St. LifeSource is coordinating the drive. Individuals wishing to donate can call (847) 803-7943 for more information.
