Aurora welcomes new deputy police chief

Gregory Thomas knows Aurora.

The west-side resident grew up in town and started as a cadet with the city's police department in 1978.

On Tuesday, the city council approved his appointment as Aurora's new deputy police chief.

He'll begin his duties, which include overseeing the department's daily operations, on Oct. 17.

Thomas, who currently is the commander in charge of support services, has been acting as deputy chief for the past few weeks after Gregory Anderson announced his retirement.

"My life has always been my family, my police career and the city of Aurora," Thomas said in a statement. "I pledge my full support to this community and to the citizens we serve."

He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Throughout his life, Thomas has stuck close to Aurora. The East Aurora High School graduate received degrees from Aurora University and Waubonsee Community College.

He's also had experience in every division of the police department.

He helped implement a geographical model that divides the city into three policing areas.

He also has helped secure millions of dollars in grants, which mostly benefited community-oriented policing initiatives, and directed advancements in computer technology.

In 2006, Thomas, who is married with three children, was named Co-Officer of the Year by the Aurora Exchange Club. He also has been honored with the Kendall County Medal of Valor.

Chief William Powell described Thomas as a "no-nonsense professional" who has "taken charge in every position he's held."

"I feel fortunate to have him as my second-in-command," he said.
