Drinks, fight, death

A 42-year-old South Elgin man was found dead late Sunday after neighbors reported a fight in Elgin, police said Monday.

Troy Simms, 42, was found at 11:45 p.m. Sunday in an apartment at 1245 Fleetwood Drive, police said.

The Kane County coroner's office said Simms died of blunt force head trauma.

There had been several men in the apartment drinking and watching football when a fight between Simms and another man broke out, police said.

A verbal dispute escalated into a fistfight, and when it was over, Simms was dead.

Neighbors said they heard yelling and noise in the apartment about 11:45 p.m. and one neighbor said it ended when there was a loud thud on the floor.

One man is in custody, though no charges have yet been filed, police said.

Simms was on parole for drug convictions, and South Elgin police said they had no contact with Simms since he was paroled.
