Cupcake sale helps children with cancer

Starting today through Oct. 21, Piece-A-Cake Bakery in East Dundee will be participating in the third annual Cupcakes for a Cause, which supports children affected by cancer.

During the week-long event, Piece-A-Cake Bakery will sell chocolate, white or yellow cupcakes, with 50 percent of sales benefiting CancerCare for Kids. Also available at an extra cost are red velvet cupcakes. This program provides free, professional support services to nearly 1,500 children and their families who are affected by cancer each year.

"Cupcakes for a Cause is a great way to do something fun with your family while helping children affected by this devastating disease," stated Diane Blum, executive director of CancerCare.

"Children diagnosed with cancer, and those who have a parent or sibling with cancer, face very difficult emotional questions and concerns that most kids their age don't have.

"Our oncology-trained social workers help children understand cancer, talk about their feelings and become less afraid of the disease," Blum said.

Having lost loved ones to cancer, bakers Diane and Roger Ahrens take the fight against cancer very seriously and are happy to be a part of Cupcakes for a Cause. A list of all participating bakeries can be found at www.cupcakesforacause.org.

Parents who are interested in hosting a bake sale can visit the Web site to find details on the event and to download materials to help them advertise their bake sale. For information, call (800) 813-HOPE (4673) or visit www.cancercare.org.

Piece-A-Cake Bakery is at 304 N. River St., East Dundee. Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the week. To order ahead, call (847) 836-6703.
