Aurora teenager hurt in head-on collision

An 18-year-old man was injured Wednesday when the car he was driving crossed the center line of Route 47 just north of Jericho Road in Sugar Grove and hit a dump truck head-on, police said. The driver of the truck was not injured.

According to Sugar Grove police investigator John Sizer, the crash occurred about 3 p.m.

Steffon Stephens of the 2600 block of Creekview in Aurora was driving a Chevrolet Corsica south on Route 47 when he hit the truck. He was flown by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

The dump truck was pulling a flatbed trailer that carried an end loader. The driver of the truck, Garnica Eutiquio, 49, of the 700 block of East Benton Street in Aurora, was checked for injuries at the scene and not transported.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved.

Sizer said Stephens' injuries appeared to be serious but not life-threatening. Witnesses said Stephens appeared to be driving normally before he crossed the center line, and there is no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved, Sizer said.

A portion of Route 47 was closed for 2½ hours due to the accident.

Good Samaritan Hospital did not immediately return a phone call seeking a condition report.
