World chess champ to compete in S. Barrington
One of the world's top chess players is coming to South Barrington.
World chess champion Anatoly Karpov will be at Barbara B. Rose School Jan. 11 to participate in a simultaneous exhibition.
A simultaneous exhibition will allow Karpov to show off his talents against numerous players all at the same time.
Considered one of the best chess players in history, Karpov is a chess grandmaster and seven-time world chess champion. He's touted as the most successful tournament player in history with more than 140 first-place finishes to his credit.
Also participating in the event are 2006 U.S. chess champion Alexander Onischuk, 2006 U.S. Open chess champion Yury Shulman and the 2006 U.S. women's chess champion Anna Zatonskih.
Registration for the event is $50 and limited to the first 60 players. The exhibition is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Rose School, 61 W. Penny Road.
The event is sponsored by the school in conjunction with the Yury Shulman Chess Without Borders organization.

Christmas Eve services: With the holidays right around the corner, Barrington United Methodist Church is inviting everyone to its Christmas Eve services.
The first service of the day will be for children and will feature music by the Cherub and Children's choirs. The children's service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Dec. 24.
The evening candlelight service, which starts at 7 p.m., will include music from the church's Chancel Choir, accompanied by Jeff Neufeld, Sam Oliver, Stephanie Preucil, Walter Preucil and Rosalyn Wesley.
Services will continue at 10:30 p.m. with a second candlelight service. Music during that service will feature the Ladies Trio and soloist Kimberly Albrecht, along with the Stonegate Strings and flutist Sam Oliver.

Free phone calls for seniors: Merrill Lynch will open its Barrington office Saturday for area seniors to make holiday phone calls.
Seniors will be allowed to use Merrill Lynch phones to make calls to family and friends anywhere in the world. They can make as many phone calls as they like during their one-hour time slot.
The office, 18 E. Dundee Road, will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. Merrill Lynch employees and their families will be on hand to assist the seniors as needed.
Refreshments will be served and gifts distributed to participating seniors. Space is limited to 25 seniors per hour, so call the Barrington Area Council on Aging at (847) 381-5030 to receive a time slot. Transportation will also be available, if needed.
