Scouts' Koschmann sets state record

This may have been Hailey Koschmann's final appearance in the IHSA Class AA girls golf state meet, but she has definitely left her mark.

The Lake Forest senior shot a 69 in the second round to post a two-round total of 9- under 135.

Koschmann broke the state record by 8 strokes and is the lowest state final total ever -- girls or boys.

The Scouts' Koschmann wasn't the only one to find her way around Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center in Carbondale.

An even-par 72 by St. Viator junior Kaela Klune and a 73 by Conant sophomore Kris Yoo gave them 151 totals.

Klune and Yoo both improved from the first round to finish tied for 11th.

"I'm really happy with 11th," Klune said. "I was shooting for top 10 but 11 isn't bad. I played really well. Yesterday my biggest fault was my putting, and today I totally fixed it. It was just a good round today."

"She hit the ball just like we did yesterday and she putted well," said Lions coach Mick Drewes. "She played really solid and played like Kaela. It was a very comfortable day for her."

Yoo also found her putting.

"It was fun. It was a good experience," Yoo said. "My putting was awesome. I think I was more used to the course and knew the greens. I was comfortable."

Prospect's Marietta Smith finished in a three-way tie for 17th at 153.

"It was a great finish," said Prospect coach Jim Hamann. "She went 2 under her last six holes. She played solid all weekend. She deserves every minute of it. She's worked hard."

"I had fun," Smith said. "(Going to state) was one of my goals. Today I tried to salvage what I could on the back nine. I kept battling. I kept a cool head and tried to stay consistent. I'm going to take some great memories."

Barrington fought its way back in the team standings to finish eighth with 667.

"We came out fighting today and shot almost 20 strokes less than yesterday," said Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck. "They were a determined group this morning. The key today was settling down and playing our game. It was a fantastic round."

The Fillies were led by seniors Brittany Keiter (163), McCall Barsamian (165) and Marina Karamanis (170).

"The seniors held strong all year and they provided the leadership," Schoeck said. "They showed the girls what tradition is all about. They are 110 percent heart."

Sophomore Taylor Quinn shot 173, while senior Amanda Schmitz posted a 180.

Normal University shot a 607 to repeat as state champion.
