Briefs: Climate change and you
The lecture "Global Climate Change: What's the Real Story?" will be presented at 7 p.m. today at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave. The presenter of the free talk is Jim Kenney, co-founder of Common Ground, who will discuss International Panel on Climate Change theories, and the challenge consumers of all ages face with climate change. Common Ground is a Deerfield-based adult education organization focused on the world's cultural, philosophical and spiritual traditions and their implications for human experience. Get tickets while they last
The U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus will present a free concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights. Tickets are available by mail only through a form published several times a week in the Daily Herald. Ticket orders must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. For details, call (847) 427-4381. The U.S. Army Field Band, an elite 65-member instrumental ensemble, performs marches, overtures, popular music and patriotic selections. The Soldiers' Chorus has earned an international reputation for presenting musical excellence and inspiring patriotism. The Daily Herald and District 214 Community Education are co-sponsoring the concert.
CROP Walk Sunday
The Barrington Area CROP Hunger Walk, an annual community hunger education and fundraising event, is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. at Barrington Middle School-Station Campus, 215 Eastern Ave. The walk, sponsored by many local churches and Church World Service, is now in its 25th year. Drug cards in Palatine
New Cook County Prescription Discount Cards can be picked up Friday at County Commissioner Gregg Goslin's mobile office at the Palatine Township Center, 721 Quentin Road, starting at 9 a.m. A new partnership between the county and the National Association of Counties has resulted in the implementation of this card, which gives residents a chance to save an average of 20 percent on prescription drugs. All county residents without prescription coverage can use this program. The card can't be used in conjunction with insurance, but it can be used when insurance doesn't cover a prescription.
