Briefs: Mayor against decision

Gurnee Mayor Kristina Kovarik made it clear this week she did not agree with a recent village board approval for a vehicle recycling facility. Trustees this month approved Auto Parts City's recycling operation for the village's far east side near Route 41, bordering a mobile home complex in neighboring Park City. Kovarik said Monday the recycling operation was not her vision for Gurnee and she won't sign an ordinance related to the project. Kovarik said her decision is symbolic and will not negate the village board's vote. She said she decided against vetoing the village board's decision.

Countywide food drive

Want to participate in one of the largest food drives in Lake County? Here's your chance. Roughly 23,000 food bags will be inserted inside today's editions of the Daily Herald, a co-sponsor of ShareFest 2007. Those bags must be dropped off at one of eight collection sites throughout the county. For dates and locations, visit www.catalystweb.org. The sites will have hundreds of volunteers to pack the food and load it on Northern Illinois Food Bank semi-trailers. ShareFest is organized by roughly 35 area churches whose volunteers will canvass neighborhoods and drop off 25,000 to 30,000 bags at households this month. The food is distributed to area food pantries. Lake County residents are asked to fill the bags with food, household items, cleaning supplies and toiletries. Bags dropped off at homes will be picked up at the curb each weekend by volunteers.
