Helping to raise capable teens

Certain skills help to prepare children to grow into adults who can face life's challenges successfully.

Parents can learn about ways to focus on those skills and specific strategies that help develop traits like character and self sufficiency at a pair of workshops Tuesday in Glenbard High School District 87.

The free sessions feature Bruce Colston, a former educator and longtime human development specialist who will present "Raising Capable Teens for the 21st Century." The presentations are open to all parents.

"Every parent's dream is to raise a capable teen," said Gilda Ross, District 87 student and community projects coordinator, who added Colston "will give parents the tools to help make that possible."

An early session at 7 p.m. is set at Glenbard North High School, 990 Kuhn Road, Carol Stream. A second one at 9:30 a.m. is planned at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn.

The presentations include tips for developing self-discipline and responsibility; ways to strengthen family bonds; the importance of promoting self-confidence rather than self-esteem; and the impact of the media on brain development.
