Maroons notch upset win over Waubonsie

It was a big day for Elgin's boys soccer team Saturday.

The Maroons opened up Upstate Eight Conference play with a 3-2 win over Waubonsie Valley, a team Elgin had never beaten in boys soccer.

"To go five years and not beat an elite team in the Upstate Eight, this was incredible," said Elgin coach Dave Borg. "It was like winning the Super Bowl."

Elgin (7-1, 1-0) trailed 2-1 at the half with Jasinto Catalan scoring the only first half goal on a direct kick.

Omar Dina tied it up in the second half off a dish from Joey Perez, and later in the half Lucas Valencia (Omar Jasso assist) put the Maroons on top for good.

Nikil Satish racked up 16 saves in goal for Elgin.

"This group responded really well at halftime, and they earned this one," Borg said. "We are all very excited. I think Waubonsie was stunned."
