Firefighter killed in motorcycle crash

Firefighters are mourning the death of one of their own after a Lake Bluff man died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash Tuesday.

Peter S. McWilliams, 50, was riding on Route 176 near Ashford Drive in Green Oaks early Monday when he drove off the road and into a construction area with a 1-foot drop of pavement, officials said.

McWilliams, a firefighter for Lake Forest Fire Department, was thrown from the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet, police said.

McWilliams died Tuesday at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said.

No one witnessed the accident, police said. A passer-by saw the motorcycle at 12:42 a.m. and called police. Police were not sure what time McWilliams crashed.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster, Lake Forest.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 E. Vine Ave., Lake Forest.

McWilliams was taken off of life support Tuesday, Keller said. An autopsy will not be performed, he said.
