Ex-trustee candidate convicted

A one-time candidate for Carpentersville village board was convicted on assault and disorderly conduct charges Tuesday.

Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles found Frank Stoneham, 50, of the 300 block of Sedgewick Street, guilty of the two charges stemming from an altercation during a Carpentersville board meeting in March.

Stoneham was sentenced to one year of supervision for the assault charge, which he will serve concurrently with the year of conditional discharge that was handed down for disorderly conduct.

In addition to the conditional discharge, Steve Sims, deputy chief of the criminal division for the Kane County state's attorney's office, said Stoneham must undergo an anger management course and follow all recommendations, and must not have hostile contact with the two state witnesses, Paul Calusinski and Mike Meyers.

Stoneham also was fined $600.

Although the prosecution had asked for Stoneham to be banned from all future village board meetings, Bowles allowed him to attend but barred him from making public comments for a year.

"The punishment is appropriate," Sims said. "The main thing was that he got the anger management."

In March, Calusinski said Stoneham made threatening comments after Calusinski addressed the board in regard to domestic violence.

Meyers, a high school student who was sitting directly behind the two men during the exchange, supported Calusinski's account, leading to the assault count.

Before exiting the board room to meet with a police officer, Stoneham approached the dais clenching a fistful of papers and called village President Bill Sarto a "scumbag."

Stoneham, who represented himself during Tuesday's trial, did not return a call for comment.

In February, Stoneham was removed from the April village board election after residents Jesus Berreles and Janet Brown successfully challenged signatures on his candidate petition.
