Briefs: Flu vaccine clinics
The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center will conduct 16 public flu clinics throughout the county Oct. 2 through Nov. 15. There will be additional weekly flu clinics every Thursday at the health department's Waukegan immunizations clinic, Oct. 11 through Dec. 27. Appointments are being taken for the health department's five clinic sites, but walk-ins will also be accepted. Appointments can be made through www.lakecountyflu.com. Patrons may also call the clinics directly to make an appointment. The remaining 11 clinics are exclusively walk-ins. For date, time, location and phone numbers of all clinics visit the Web site. Tulips instead of tobacco
The Lake County Health Department is encouraging residents to plant red tulips to recognize people living tobacco-free and honor those people touched by a tobacco-related disease during Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 20 through 28. The event, known as "Plant a Promise" to be tobacco-free, has a goal of creating a bloom of "tobacco-free red" in the spring. Over the last two years, Lake County residents have planted more than 22,000 red tulips at almost 150 locations. Some nonprofit organizations can receive free bulbs while supplies last from the Tobacco Free Lake County program at the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center. Discounted bulbs are also available. For details, call (847) 377-8090. Those who register their site with Tobacco Free Lake County will get an official "Plant a Promise" sign for their garden or window.
Changes at library
After a long absence, public meeting space again will be available at the main Cook Memorial Public Library in Libertyville. Starting Monday, a lower-level meeting room will be available for library programming, staff training and, eventually, community meetings. Adult programs will be staged in the new meeting room starting this fall. To make room, the audio-visual department has been moved to the main floor of the library, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave. The move is expected to be completed today.
