Show Us Your Library Card: September is Library Card Signup Month. Show your Des Plaines library card to participating merchants during September and receive discounts or other special values. Visit the library or the library Web site at www.dppl.org for a list of merchants and discounts.
Documentary film: A feature-length documentary film on the life and death of the electric car will be screened at 6:30 p.m. today. Call the Registration Desk at (847) 376-2787 for the film title. This is a Centennial Celebration program.
Low-Vision Fair -- at Niles Senior Center: Speakers, vendors and agency representatives will discuss vision loss from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Niles Senior Center. The event includes displays of the latest products services for persons with low vision. Library representatives will also be on hand with information about the library's assistive technology devices. Co-sponsored with other participating libraries at Niles Senior Center.
Art Exhibit: The Des Plaines Art Guild is sponsoring an exhibit of oil paintings by Pat Franson in the third floor magazine reading area throughout September.
Drop-In Storytimes: Storytimes for children ages 3-5 will be held from 10-10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and 2-2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Storytimes for two-year-olds will be held from 10:45-11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no drop-in storytimes on Oct. 30, 31 and Nov. 1.
Story Explorers: Kids in grades 3-5 will get together at 4 p.m. Sept. 27 to participate in theme-based activities including stories, crafts and a snack. (R-YS)
Ballet Folklorico: Ballet Folklorico Mexico dance troupe will perform dynamic dances and original music in an array of colorful costumes at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Babysitting Clinic: Participants will learn about infant care, child safety, entertaining children and more. Participants must attend all sessions and pass an open book final examination in order to receive a Babysitter's Certificate at the clinic. Sessions will be held from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Co-sponsored by the city of Des Plaines, with guest speakers from the city's health, fire, and police departments. (R-YS)
Tuesday Morning Book Discussion: Reference Librarian Joanne Griffin will lead an adult book discussion of "Foreign Babes in Beijing," by Rachel DeWoskin at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Rotary Heritage Room on the third floor. Books are available one month prior at the Readers' Services Desk. (R-RS)
Drop-In Chess Club: Children at all skill levels can meet other players, learn strategies to improve their game and have a great time playing chess, 4-5 p.m. Wednesday.
Introduction to the Internet: Class for Internet beginners covers basic techniques and helps you understand what's out there in "cyberspace." Includes how to use the library Web page and catalog at 10 a.m. Wednesday or 6:30 p.m. Oct. 4. (R)
A Woman's Journey Toward Financial Independence: A financial lecture from Nancy Reiser will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday. (R)
Stories & More: At 4 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 4 and 18, the library will host an afternoon of stories, crafts and related activities for children ages 5-7. (R-YS)
Foreign Film Series: Enjoy a free feature length foreign film at the library at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5. Call for title and description: (847) 376-2841. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.
Centennial Celebration: Join the Des Plaines Public Library in celebrating its 100th anniversary from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 7. An old-fashioned carousel, games, refreshments and entertainment will be available at this free event on Library Plaza. See the Library's Web site for more details: www.dppl.org
