Briefs: Waukegan defends vision
Waukegan officials Friday criticized the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regarding a proposed clean-up of the city's harbor. The city wants industry to be removed from the harbor as part of a lakefront redevelopment, a situation the city said in a statement it has made clear for years. The EPA has refused to sign an agreement to release more than $23 million in funds with that condition included, saying plans beyond the clean-up are not relative to the grant. Agency officials were not available for comment late Friday. The city also announced that it has sued some harbor industries in federal court, claiming they should be liable for the entire $36 million clean-up.

Police report lottery scam
Mundelein police are searching for two people who stole $1,900 from a man in a local lottery scam. The theft occurred Aug. 21 at the Mundelein Currency Exchange, 366 Townline Road. The victim was approached by a woman who said she had a winning lottery ticket and needed $11,000 to claim the prize. A man then left the currency exchange and offered to pay $5,000 or $6,000 to help, police said. The victim gave the woman $1,900, and she then appeared to put all the cash together in an envelope and give it back to the victim so he could mail it to the lottery commission. The envelope actually contained shredded newspaper, however, police said. The two were seen leaving the area in a dark blue Dodge Caravan, police said. Anyone with information about this or similar thefts can call police at (847) 968-4600.
