College of Lake County notes

Head to Greece in May: Take a 16-day classical odyssey to Greece next May by enrolling in an overseas field study course offered by the College of Lake County. To learn more about this educational travel opportunity, attend an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Room D106 on the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Another informational meeting will be held on Jan. 22.

The 16-day study cruise and tour will run from May 17 to June 1, 2008. It includes a week-long tour of the Greek mainland and Peloponnese, including Athens, Delphi, Nafplio and Mycenae, followed by a seven-day cruise of the Greek Islands and Turkey, including Istanbul, Rhodes, Kusadasi and Ephesus, Santorini, Patmos, Mykonos and Crete. The trip will end with two additional nights in Athens.

The cost is $3,850, including daily breakfasts, many additional meals, all cruise meals, excursions, museum fees, hotel, airfare and Travelguard trip cancellation insurance. CLC tuition and air taxes are additional.

Literary events: A variety of local poets will perform at the fall Poetry Slam on from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Library Atrium at the CLC Grayslake campus. The event will feature professional stand-up comic, published author and poet Tim Joyce as master of ceremonies.

Everyone is welcome to come and read, rap or sing their own written words. Light refreshments will be served, and gift certificates and cash prizes awarded for first through third place winners. Contestants must read their own original poetry, using no props or costumes, with a three-minute time limit per contestant per round (approximately three to six rounds). Explore "Don Quixote and Gastronomy in the 16th century" in a presentation from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 1 in room C003 on the Grayslake campus. This audio-visual presentation will highlight the eating and social conditions of the early 1660s through the pages of the "Don Quixote de la Mancha" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Business skills workshops: The College of Lake County's Illinois Small Business Development Center is offering fall workshops designed to quickly improve the business knowledge and skills of small business owners and entrepreneurs:

• Child Care - Starting and Growing a Successful Business (TBSM 16) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 19 to Oct. 24. This six-week course explains how to start and operate a child care business and stay within all legal requirements. Offered in partnership with YWCA Lake County, it is also taught in Spanish and meets at the same time as the English section. Course fee: $100.

• QuickBooks Module 1 - A Practical Introduction (TBSM 20) 6:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday and Sept. 27. Course fee: $149.

• Sales and Selling - Close Those Deals! (TBSM 113) from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 25 Course fee: $35.

• Starting a Business in Illinois (TBSM 10) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 26 Course fee: $40.

"Turning a New Leaf Over": A free informational workshop called "Turning a New Leaf Over: How to Expunge Your Record" will be presented at 1 p.m. Saturday at the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus, 33 N. Genesee St., Waukegan.

The featured speaker is attorney Tamara N. Holder, founder of Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Expungement Clinic. The educational opportunity will also include inspirational music, drama and motivational speakers. Participants will learn about expungements, seals, pardons and eligibility for voting rights. One-on-one consultations with Holder will be offered following the event.

When I Grow Up: "When I Grow Up I Want To Be," an exhibition of paintings and drawings by children living in orphanages in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is on display at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the College of Lake County Grayslake campus. The exhibit also includes documentary photographs of the children who created the artwork. The exhibit continues through Sunday.

The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. Hours vary during college breaks.

Discovery! art programs: The College of Lake County Discovery! program offers several programs for adults 50 and over with a love of art and culture:

Four Italian women painters who overcame burdens, barriers and scandals to achieve genius and recognition in their own day will be showcased in a four-week class Sept. 26 to Oct. 17.

"La Boheme" will be the subject of a lecture on Sept. 29 for opera lovers and theater-goers alike. The musical theater team of Rodgers and Hart will be the subject of a four week multi-media class covering their work from the 1920s to 1940s. The course will be offered Oct. 4 to 25.

The Revival and Renewal with Cinema Classics: Obsessively Romantic class will examine obsessive love using "Letter from an Unknown Woman" and "In a Lonely Place" as the basis for discussion. The class meets on Mondays from Sept. 24 to Oct. 8.

Hands-on classes in art and photography are also available through Discovery! Experimental Art for Everyone will explore various techniques and media to create mixed media pieces. Beginning Watercolor Painting and Watercolor Painting will teach painting fundamentals and technique at two different sites. Digital camera users will learn camera usage and photo technique in Dazzling Digital Photography: How to Use and Have Fun with a Digital Camera.

Las Guitarras de Espana: Las Guitarras de Espana (The Guitars of Spain), a world music ensemble with a Spanish guitar twist, will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 28. at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County.

The ensemble performs a fusion of Cuban son (a relative to salsa music), rumba, R&B, Latin jazz, blues and African percussion with an underlying flamenco music and dance focus.

Tickets are $28 for the general public, with discounts available for CLC staff, seniors 65 and over and members of the CLC Alumni Association. CLC student tickets are $16 and children's tickets are $13. Price includes a $1 JLC restoration fee per ticket. Two film series: The College of Lake County will present a series of recent international films and a series of independent films. There is no charge for the films, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Fridays in room A162 (unless noted otherwise) on the CLC Grayslake Campus.

• "Moolaadé" (2004) will be screened on Sept. 28. Directed by African filmmaker and novelist Ousmane Sembene, "Moolaadé" deals with one woman's revolt against her village's cruel traditions in a manner that surprises, delights and inspires. This film is being co-sponsored by the CLC Women's Center.

• "Shutter" (2004) will be shown on Oct. 19 in the C Wing Auditorium (C005). "Shutter" falls within the tradition of recent Asian horror films while presenting an original spin on the imagery and themes of movies such as "Ringu" and "A Tale of Two Sisters."

• "Après Vous" (2003), screened on Nov. 2, is a comedy about death, love and French food. A Parisian waiter stops a man from committing suicide and then takes him under his wing, but matters become complicated when he attempts to repair his new friend's broken romance. This film is co-sponsored by the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts Division as part of French Week at CLC. Upcoming films in the CLC Independent Film Series include:

• "Cake: A Wedding Story" will be shown on Oct. 5. When two star-crossed lovers set on eloping are forced into having a big wedding, the bride develops a plan of her own. But the groom is not privy to the plan, and family and friends start to take sides at a reception for a wedding that never took place.

• "Riding Solo on Top of the World" will be presented on Nov. 16. Director Gaurav Jani covers thousands of miles on his motorcycle, from his home in Mumbai through the Changthang Plateau, one of the most remote places in the world. Along the way, he films his journey through the beautiful landscapes and the people he meets along the way, including the Buddhist Chang pas.

• "King Corn" will be shown on Dec. 7. The film concerns two recent college graduates who travel to their ancestral home in rural Iowa, plant a single acre of America's most powerful crop, corn, and attempt to follow its fate as food. In their year-long adventure they see the realities of modern farming first-hand, explore a fast-food nation built on corn syrup sodas and corn-fed meat and come to question government subsidies, intensive agriculture and cheap food.

Children's shows: Parents and young audience members will be entertained by shows at the College of Lake County this fall organized by the Student Activities Program Board and performed by the Round Lake Park District.

"Cinderella's Glass Slipper," a musical version of the classic tale, will be performed at 2 and 4 p.m. Sept. 30.

"Once Upon a Wolf," in which the Big Bad Wolf decides he wants to be the good guy for a change and sets off on a mission to become a hero will be performed at 2 and 4 p.m. Nov. 4.

Entertainer Thaddeus Rex will perform at 2 p.m. on Dec. 2, with original songs and stories, comedy, acting, music and audience participation. Each audience member is invited to bring a new or gently-used book to donate in exchange for free admission. Without a book, tickets are $5 per person. The books will be donated to the Lake County Reach Out and Read program.

Star Wars/Trek fan expert: The College of Lake County will sponsoring a lecture by Dan Madsen, a publisher and expert on Star Wars and Star Trek fans, from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 in the C Wing Auditorium (C005) at the College of Lake County.

Madsen will speak about the future of Star Trek and Star Wars, how to keep positive despite adversities, and the documentary "The Force Among Us," which presents a positive look at Star Wars fans and features interviews with CLC sociology professor and Star Wars and Star Trek expert John Tenuto and CLC students. Madsen will also discuss issues of tolerance and the feature film "Short Story," which is loosely based on his life as a little person.

Madsen will be joined by Cris and Cortney Macht, the writers, producers and directors of "The Force Among Us," which was partially filmed at CLC.
