The briefs: Bike stolen

• A 31-year-old homeless man reported his black and blue striped mountain bike stolen Friday, police said. The victim said he was sitting on a bench near the Chicago Street Metra station at 4:45 p.m. when he saw a man who hangs out in the area ride off on his bike, which was parked in the station lot. He didn't know the man's name.
• More than $1,000 in cash and money orders was stolen from the residence of a 25-year-old Elgin woman this week, police said. The woman said the money was taken between 8:30 a.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. Friday from her residence on the 1100 block of Fleetwood Drive. The three money orders were for $625, $272 and $35. The cash totaled $160. There were no signs of forced entry.
• The rear window of a 34-year-old man's vehicle was shattered after three unknown men threw an object through it Friday night, police said. The victim said he was driving on Hammond Avenue at 9:10 p.m. when the incident occurred. An officer found a chunk of asphalt at the scene. A witness told police the suspects came from a house on the 900 block of Cookane Avenue. An officer was speaking to a resident of one house when the officer saw someone run to the side entrance of the home. The man was evasive and said the incident involved other people but told the victim he would pay for the damages. The victim said he would not press charges as long as he was paid for the damages.
