Bicyclist dies after being hit by train in Kane County
An unidentified bicyclist is dead after being hit by a freight train in Kane County around 5:35 p.m. Sunday.
The man was hit while traveling north on Engel Road trying to cross the tracks near Plank Road when he was hit by a westbound train just west of Burlington, Kane County Sheriff's Department Lt. Pat Gengler said.
The crossing does not have warning lights or a gate, only a wooden sign marking the tracks. Police believe the man may have had headphones on, preventing him from hearing the train coming, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. "It was pretty instantaneous," Gengler said.
Canadian National Railways owns the tracks and the train involved in the crash and had representatives at the scene to help with the investigation, police said.
