Cubs make a pair of minor transactions

The Cubs have sent outfielder Buck Coats to Cincinnati for a player to be named later, and completed their deal with Detroit that brought outfielder Craig Monroe to Chicago.

Left-handed pitcher Clay Rapada has been claimed off waivers by Detroit, a transaction that satisfies their Aug. 23 trade for Monroe and a cash consideration in exchange for a player to be named.

Coats, 25, was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 18th round of the 2000 Draft. With Triple-A Iowa this season, the left-handed batter is hitting .303 (138-for-455) with 21 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBI in 123 games. He made his major league debut with the Cubs last season, hitting .167 (3-for-18) in 18 games.

Rapada, 26, is 7-2 with 17 saves and a 3.58 ERA (22 ER/55.1 IP) in 55 relief appearances for Iowa this season. Signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2002, Rapada made his major league debut this season, tossing a scoreless 0.1 innings June 14 vs. Seattle.

Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald will have more on the Cubs later today as they wrap up their three-game series with Milwaukee.
