Police contract passes

The Winfield village board narrowly passed a two-year union contract Thursday for the police department's 16 sworn officers. The new pact provides for a 3 percent salary increase this year and a 3 percent pay hike next year. The contract revamps the department pay schedule, eliminating an increase in the first six months of an officer's employment and instead providing for a raise in an officer's 11th year. Under the new deal, a rookie officer will earn $44,774, and the top pay for a Winfield officer would increase to $68,046. The union's old police contract expired May 15.
