Lake County buys 35 acres of open land

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - The Lake County Forest Preserves board has added 35 acres of open space with the purchase of two parcels on the county's west edge.

The (Waukegan) News-Sun reports (http://trib.in/1KfHZ5R ) the forest preserves system will pay $1 million for a 20-acre plot in Fremont and Wauconda townships and another in Fremont Township.

The larger parcel cost $550,000 and is adjacent to Lakewood Forest Preserve. It has a cellphone tower the owner may retain for 50 years.

The property overlaps Broberg Marsh. That's the site of extensive forest preserve restoration and a key breeding spot for birds.

The other, 15-acre parcel costing $442,000 is on the north side of Ray Lake Forest Preserve.
