Briefs: GOP field narrows in county board race
And then there were two. Naperville attorney David Wentz announced Tuesday he was withdrawing from the Feb. 5 Republican primary race for a DuPage County Board District 5 seat. That leaves a clear field for incumbent Jim Healy and former Naperville Unit District 203 board member Gerry Cassioppi in the GOP primary, although it's expected the Democrats will field candidates in the general election. Wentz said work commitments and being president of the Exchange Club for the Lincolnland District affected his decision not to run.
Coach to lead parade:
Naperville Jaycees on Tuesday named Al Carius as grand marshal of Naperville's Labor Day Parade. Carius, a Naperville resident, has coached track and cross country at North Central College for 38 years, leading national championship teams and guiding hundreds of individuals to national titles. He'll headline the parade, which carries the theme "Our Wonderful World of Sports," when it steps off from Mill Street and Fifth Avenue to wind through downtown Naperville on Sept. 3. The parade is in conjunction with the Jaycees' Last Fling festival.
Fountain by civic center
Glen Ellyn Village Officials informally agreed to put a 5-foot water fountain in front of the civic center at 535 Duane St. Village President Vicky Hase said the village has roughly $1,000 in its budget for beautification, and board members agreed the accessory would enhance the area. Officials said they intend to finalize plans in the coming months.
Craig's Pharmacy to close
Craig Mandel, owner of Craig's Pharmacy at 401 N. Main St. in Glen Ellyn, will fill prescriptions for the last time today, though his shop will remain open through August 31. Mandel's shop has been in the village's downtown business district for 18 years and has been a drug store for about 80 years. Mandel will relocate to the Dominick's Pharmacy on Roosevelt Road.
