Friends meeting: The Friends of the Lake Villa District Library will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Meeting Room A at Lake Villa District Library. All are welcome to attend.

Civil War Nurse: Before she rose to international celebrity with the publication of "Little Women," Louisa May Alcott published "Hospital Sketches," a portrait of her work as a nurse for wounded soldiers during the winter of 1862-63.

Drawn from her account, this program, brought to life by Leslie Goddard, at 2 p.m. Aug. 26, has all the humor and pathos typical of Alcott.

Goddard will recount Alcott's first experiences as a single woman nursing grown men and finish with a poignant description of the death of a noble soldier of unusual bravery. The program will give insight into the women who transformed the all-male profession of nursing during the America's Civil War.

Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome to attend.

Civil War workshops: The Civil War Encampment is coming in September. Learn how to make an outfit to wear to the 1800's ball at the mansion or day wear for the Civil War weekend during the No Sew Workshops for the Lake Villa Civil War Weekend.

Workshops will be at 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Lake Villa District Library, 1001 E. Grand Ave.

Create the perfect clothes to wear at the Civil War Encampment from tablecloths, bed spreads, prom dresses, fancy blouses or anything that includes yards of fabric.

Each program will begin with a demonstration followed by personal assistance from the Lake Villa Historical Society volunteers. Bring materials and ideas.
