Briefs: Fed sinks yet more into bank system

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Reserve added billions more to the banking system Wednesday in a fight to keep the credit crisis from derailing the economy. By pumping an additional $7 billion into the banking system, the Fed sought to keep the federal funds rate, the interest banks charge each other, from rising above the Fed's current target of 5.25 percent. Since Aug. 9, the Fed has injected $71 billion into the system.

AA recalls 460 attendants

FORT WORTH, Texas -- American Airlines said Wednesday it is sending recall notices to 460 furloughed flight attendants to address staffing needs and projected attrition through the rest of this year. This recall is comprised of former TWA flight attendants and is in addition to about 200 American Airlines and former TWA furloughed flight attendants contacted earlier this year. Those flight attendants who accept the recall and meet all requirements will be eligible to return to service in either November or December.

Shareholder suit against Motorola

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The law firm of Brower Piven said Wednesday it has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Chicago on behalf of purchasers of Motorola common stock between July 19, 2006, and Jan. 4. The complaint alleges during this period the company, and one or more members of its senior management, violated federal securities laws by issuing false and misleading statements that artificially inflated the market price of the company's securities, causing people to overpay for the securities. No class action has yet been certified. "Motorola intends to vigorously contest the suit," spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson said.

Existing home sales fall in 41 states

WASHINGTON -- Sales of existing homes fell in 41 states during the April-June quarter, while home prices were down in one-third of metropolitan areas surveyed, the National Association of Realtors reported Wednesday. However, existing home prices were up in 97 of the 149 metropolitan areas surveyed compared with a year ago.
