Getting back on your feet after storm
Here are some tips on how to handle insurance claims, ComEd and contractors:
Who Pays? Even if it is your neighbor's tree in your back yard, it is likely your insurance company that will have to cover the damage, unless you can prove negligence. Public Aid: The state is not offering any financial aid other than low-interest loans for recovery. Call the state treasurer's office at (312) 814-1244 or e-mail opportunityillinois@treasurer.state.il.us. Federal aid, if it comes, is months away.
Need shelter? The Red Cross is providing shelter and food for flood victims and those still without power. Call (312) 729-6100. Contact your local town as well.
ComEd claims: The power company will not cover related damage if the outage is the result of a storm, flooding, animals or customer tampering. If you think your outage is not in those categories, call (800) 334-7661 for a claim form.
Document it: Take pictures of the damage to your house and property. Save all receipts related to recovery efforts and create a detailed list of all damaged items. Document your contact with the insurance company and contractors.
To toss or not to toss: Consult your insurance company as to whether damaged items should be saved for viewing by claims adjusters. But be aware of local laws that require such items to be disposed.
Beware of fraud: Con artists can flock to devastated areas. Be wary of door-to-door solicitors. Do not pay cash, and avoid large down payments. Call the state's consumer fraud hotline, (800) 386-5438, and check with your local town and better business bureau before contracting with a company.
