Kirk favors ending BP tax credits
Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk of Highland Park will try to take away tax credits from BP if the company tries to use its Indiana permit to dump more pollutants into Lake Michigan, the source of much of the region's drinking water. BP won approval to do just that starting in a few years as part of a plant expansion that will allow it to refine more oil at its Whiting facility. Kirk's federal measure would deny BP a tax break on its expansion project. He unveiled it Monday at the first meeting of a group of mayors whose towns border the lake.
