Former police officer convicted of conspiracy

A former Chicago police officer has been convicted of conspiracy for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from drug dealers.

With his partner, Richard Doroniuk, Mahmoud Shamah was also accused of raiding a storage locker and stealing $30,000 in 2006. The money was placed there by the FBI as part of a sting operation.

The case against the 29-year-old Shamah included testimony by Doroniuk that police officers regularly carried crack to plant on suspects, paid informants for dubious information and even bribed a judge to approve an arrest warrant.

After Tuesday's verdict, federal prosecutors asked for Shamah's bail to be revoked, arguing he was a flight risk because of the lengthy sentence he faced. However, U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman allowed Shamah to remain free.
