Public employees should sacrifice, too

What's wrong with this picture?

This morning I read that Motorola cut executive pay, froze salaries and cut employee benefits. Many other companies are doing the same thing.

In addition many of our residents are on fixed retirement pay. We are in a recession and there is virtually no inflation - in fact, there are concerns that we may be in a deflationary period.

This morning I also read that the Arlington Heights Village Board approved a 3.5 percent a year pay increase for each of the next three years for our fine policemen and women. I have not heard of any public sector employees getting 0 percent pay increases. Most get at least 3 to 5 percent increases each year including this year.

We, the taxpayers, who get no pay increases foot the bill through increased property taxes.

Isn't it about time for public sector employees to get with the program? At a minimum, can't the public sector employees take a one-year freeze in pay, beginning now, and then take another look at it next year?
